This Week on the Homestead. 02/16/20 – 02/22/20

This week on the homestead has been pretty busy. I have had some long days at work so have been unable to do as much as I like, but we have gotten a few things done.

Last week I wasn’t able to get a post in to document what we did because I was quite tired after Saturday. I was able to get quite a bit done on the chicken area; the run part is done and I was planning to work on the living quarters. However, we saw a free chicken coop on the Nextdoor app that will work perfectly with the run I built. We will be getting that coop delivered in a week.

I was also able to plant the two pomegranate trees that we received from Trico, our power company.

The trees looked like sticks, and I was kind of worried that they were dead. Thankfully, I saw spots where leaves are starting to form already.

Speaking of trees, our little apple trees have started to bloom. The buds are dark pink before they have opened, and then light pink as flowers.

Monday, I was off of work, so we had time to go to the store to buy chicks. Our children have been hand-feeding the chicks and they are quite friendly little birds so far. Whenever you put your hand in their box, they flock around to see what you have for them.

We have some aloe plants beside our garage that have had a flower stalk for weeks. I have been semi patiently waiting for the flowers to open. Finally, there is something there to see.

Today we had a good rain storm come through. We ended up with about a half inch of rain, which is great for all our plants. That rain should help the wild flowers in the area start to bloom. We are looking forward to going to some of the local spots where there are large amounts of flowers to see in the next couple of weeks. The remnants of the storm left behind clouds that lit up nicely for tonight’s sunset.
